Temp 16/23℃
Hi, this is Kuma who is confused by Daylight savings time, because this is the first time for me. Even though it is twenty o’clock, the sun has not set yet! But morning will come normally, so just sleeping time will decrease.
This time I introduce free galleries in Melbourne. There are many galleries ! I wonder this is one of the reason that Melbourne is such an artistic city.
① NGV (National Gallery of Victoria)
I think this is the biggest museum in Melbourne, but permanent exhibitions can be entered for free. It is located across the bridge from Flinders Street Station. The appearance is like a big cube. The Federation Square that is located next to Flinders Street Station also has same name museum and also be entered for free. Both are very large scale, so I recommend you to go on a day with nothing scheduled. Both contents are changed periodically.
Note) If you entered with a big bag such as a backpack, you might be asked by the security guard to deposit your bag at the reception desk. In this case, please deposit your bag. You don’t have to pay money at reception desk.
②Arts Center
This is located in front of NGV. There is a free exhibition room. When you enter from the entrance of the NGV side, you can see the room on your left side. There is an exhibition of the rock scene. The scale is not big, but there are many contents. Collaboration of light and sound is very beautiful. You can make original playlists for a fee.
③ ACMI (Australian Center for the Moving Image)
This is a gallery about images in Federation Square. Permanent exhibition is free. Various things from movies to games all over the world are on display. You can play games, shoot with a 360 degree camera like a Matrix. If you went with your friends, it would be more enjoyable.
④ State Library Victoria
Although this is the largest library in Melbourne, the upper floors from the 3rd floor (Level 2) are a galleries. The most famous picture of this library was taken from the position of the gallery. I’ve seen “Hokusai manga” for the first time here lol
(November 2018, galleries are renovation now, but you can enter another door!)
City Library and Dockland Library also have plan exhibitions on the second floor.
⑤ Australian Center for Contemporary
This is located southern from NGV. Although there’re only plan exhibitions here, you can enter for free. The inside is not wide, but the shape of the building is interesting. There is a small cinema next to this museum.
⑥ 【Student only】 Immigration Museum, Melbourne Museum
Although it is only for students, the Immigration Museum and the Melbourne Museum are free to enter. Please be sure to show your student ID at the reception desk before entering!
That’s it, it was a museum list that you can enter for free. Besides, free events are held everywhere in Melbourne on the weekend, so it’s very grateful for the no-money person who have free time.
Well then, have a nice day ~!
